75 anyos na: Gov’t urged to release political prisoner Jesus Alegre from Bilibid

Political prisoners support group Kapatid has urged the government to release for humanitarian reasons ailing 75-year-old political prisoner Jesus Alegre from the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City.

“As the country marked its 123rd Independence Day, we sincerely ask the government to release Jesus Alegre from prison for humanitarian reasons and let him fight for his life as a free man,”said Kaparid spokesperson Fides Lim said in a statement.

“He certainly needs to be taken care of without the stress brought by his wrongful conviction and imprisonment,” said Lim. who lamented that Alegre who pointed out that the congested prison will not spare him from the COVID-19 virus.

Kapatid said Alegre, who was diagnosed with chronic pulmonary disease and diabetes melitus, was taken to the Blibid hospital last Saturday (June 12) due to difficulty in breathing..

It added Alegre who has swollen legs and could no longer stand has been vomiting food for a week and suffering from diarrhea.

Kapatid said Alegre is only “a poor farmer” from Barangay Taba-Ao in Sagay town, Negros Occidental.

“He has been in jail for 16 years after being convicted for a trumped-up murder charge to drive him away from the small plot of land he tilled,” the group lamented.

“His wife Moreta, now 74, and son Selman, 47, were also convicted and are held, respectively, at the Correctional Institute for Women in Mandaluyong and at the NBP Maximum Security Compound,” it added.
