Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri on Wednesday (August 12) proposed the appointment of acting Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Karl Kendrick Chua to head the embattled Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (Philhealth).
In an interview over ANC’s “Headstart” Wednesday (August 12), Zubiri said Chua will be the “perfect” official to head Philhealth due to his “unquestionable” character and finance background.
“Somebody like Karl Chua would be perfect for a job on PhilHealth because he’s a numbers guy. He will see the disparity and the discrepancies in the release of funds,” he said.
The Universal Healthcare Law requires the president and CEO of PhilHealth to have at least seven years of experience in the field of public health, management, finance, and health economics or a combination of expertise in these fields.
Zubiri, however, said the President should not appoint a doctor.
“The insiders and doctors have told me that the President shouldn’t appoint a doctor because the doctors’ focus is really on saving lives, not really on management of these corporate type endeavors,” he said.
Philhealth is rocked by another corruption controversy concerning its release of advance payments for COVID-19 cases to healthcare institutions which don’t have patients with the virus. A whistleblower also claims that high-ranking officials of the agency have illegally pocketed P15 billion.
