Delta response, debt, unemployment missing in Duterte’s long SONA — Recto

Despite a lengthy State of the Nation Address (SONA), Senator Ralph Recto stated that he was not able to hear anything regarding what he considered pertinent issues the country is currently facing in the one he called the longest in the 28 he has attended.

Among the issues he mentioned that President Rodrigo Duterte failed to address were the arrival of the Delta variant of COVID-19, and of Metro Manila being placed under Enhanced Community Quarantine beginning August 6 and how this measure would be approached.

“So how do we address itong bagong variant na ito? So we expected more discussion on how government will address the pandemic, particularly the new variant. Katulad ng halimbawa, mayroon ba tayong sapat na testing capability sa bagong variant, diba? Or are we investing in our health infrastructure na yun ang kailangan, nabibigay ba natin nang sapat yung kailangan ng ating mga frontline healthcare workers,” Recto asked.

Other issues the President failed to mention, according to Recto, were the government’s recovery plan to combat increasing unemployment and rising market prices, the country’s monumental debt, and the rise in hunger and poverty incidences.

“Papaano matutulungan ng pamahalaan yung mga kababayan natin na hindi makakain, walang trabaho. Palagay ko yun ang hinihintay ng ating mga kababayan,” he said.
