Duterte admits illegal drugs, corruption ‘still with us’

By Prince Golez

Despite government reforms, President Rodrigo Duterte acknowledged that the country continues to be plagued with corruption and illegal drugs.

“While we were busy instituting reforms, the twin ogres of illegal drugs and corruption laid low for a while only to resurface as still with us,” Duterte said in his final State of the Nation Address Monday.

Even with the arrest of thousands of drug traffickers every day, the Chief Executive said the government has yet to rid the country of illegal drugs.

“If you look at the [8888], there are about a thousand Filipinos arrested everyday by the police in connection with drug trafficking. And that is why I go crazy looking at the situation. They are still around. We do not have the laboratories now because nawala na sila at itong naiwan ngayon are doing the importation,” according to him.

To eradicate corruption, Duterte advised the next president to “declare martial law” and replace all government workers.

“[Corruption is] endemic in government. You cannot stop corruption. Nobody can stop corruption unless you overturn the government completely,” the President said.

“If I were the next president, if you think there’s really a need for you to change everybody in the system, then you declare martial law and fire everybody and allow the new generation to come in to work for the government,” he added.
