Senate ‘medal of honor’ awaits Diaz, other Pinoy Olympics winners – Tolentino

Filipino medal winners in the ongoing summer Olympics in Tokyo will receive the highest recognition from the Senate upon their return, administration Senator Francis Tolentino said.

Tolentino made the remarks amidst the historic first Olympic gold medal victory of the Philippines on Monday via weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz (55-kg female’s category) in the ongoing 32nd Olympics being held in Tokyo, Japan

Tolentino and two other majority bloc senators namely, Senate Majority Floor Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri and Sen. Juan Edgardo Angara filed a resolution last week that seeks to grant the so-called “Senate Medal of Honor” to Filipino athletes who will be able to secure a podium finish the 32nd Olympiad, regardless whether it’s a gold, silver, or a bronze medal.

The Senate Medal of Honor award is in recognition of not just outstanding athletes, but also to other those individuals or institutions that will give honor in various field of expertise such as sports, military and defense, law enforcement, science and technology, education, humanitarian, and even in other forms of public service—including the field of journalism.

The proponents of the resolution recognize the extraordinary efforts and contributions of outstanding individuals or institutions in various fields of expertise that “served as a symbol of hope to the Filipino nation.”

By virtue of the Philippine Senate Medal of Honor, the proponents of the resolution stressed that core values of excellence, integrity, patriotism, nationalism, and hard work, among others worthy of emulation, will be nurtured and further cultivated for the common good of the sovereign Filipino people.

The upper chamber in the past has consistently recognized and commended Filipinos who have excelled in their own field of expertise and, through their own actions and example, served as a symbol of hope to the Filipino nation.

The recognition set to be given by the Senate can be compared to the Congressional Gold Medal of the United States Congress which is their highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions by individuals or institutions. (JCC)
