Duterte praises DepEd call for World Bank apology over education report

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte has lauded the Department of Education (DepEd) for calling out the World Bank for its report on the dismal state of Philippine education.

“I commend Secretary Leonor Briones for calling out the World Bank on this issue,” Duterte said during his televised address Monday.

The Chief Executive hoped that a “more accurate” report on the country’s education system will be made.

“For the sake of the transparency and policy direction, we would like to know the latest assessment matrix of student performance and achievement, as well as the latest national data and figures in terms of learning outcomes, especially during the pandemic, so we can identify which gaps need to be addressed,” he said.

“I have no doubt that the Department of Education will do everything it can to correct the misconception and I’m sure that the things that we will provide to them will be the true and accurate situation in the Philippines,” added Duterte.

On July 8, the World Bank issued an apology to the Philippine government for publishing a report based on old data, stating that more than 80 percent of Filipino students fell below the minimum proficiency levels.
