Duterte to grant Hidilyn Diaz ‘millions’ in cash reward for Olympic gold – Palace

Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz will receive cash incentives from President Rodrigo Duterte after winning the first-ever Olympic gold medal for the Philippines in Tokyo, Japan, Malacañang said.

“Milyun-milyon po ang pinangako ng Presidente para doon sa makakakamit ng gintong medalya at ang pribadong sektor ay naglaan din ng milyun-milyon,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in yesterday’s virtual presser.

But, Roque refused to state the exact amount.

“Ayaw ko lang pong sabihin ang exact figure dahil nais ko pang tumaas kaysa bumaba doon sa figure na alam ko ‘no dahil Hidilyn truly deserves it,” according to him.

“Kung anuman iyong pagkukulang sa training, I’m sure na mababawi po lahat iyan doon sa generosity hindi lang po ng pamahalaan kung hindi ng pribadong sektor dahil she truly made us proud,” he added.

Republic Act No. 10699 or the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act grants Olympic gold medalists P10 million and an Olympic Gold Medal of Valor.

Businessmen Manny Pangilinan and Ramon Ang have also committed P10 million each for gold medal winners.
