No vice president is immune from lawsuits, National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) president Edre Olalia said.
“VP no immunity from suit,” read his social media post.
The lawyer stressed this after President Rodrigo Duterte said over the weekend that he might as well run for vice president to evade lawsuits awaiting him once his term as chief executive ends.
“That is rewriting the Constitution and even jurisprudence,” Olalia said about Duterte’s statement.
“Only the Pres is inmune from suit and this is not even spelled out in present 87 Consti – unlike in 73 Marcos Consti – but only recognized in prevailing jurisprudence,” he pointed out.
Olalia commented that what Duterte said is “either a Freudian slip or he has premeditated naughty intentions for now-he-is-not-running-now-he-is-running plans for VP.”
