House Minority leader and Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate on Monday urged Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi to concentrate on his job and find ways to lower the prices of electricity and petroleum products in the country.
Zarate made the statement as oil companies announced another round of increase in prices of gasoline and diesel starting tomorrow and after the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) announced power rate hike this month.
“When will these price hikes stop and what is the DOE doing to mitigate these increases?” Zarate asked.
If Cusi continue to prioritize politics, Zarate said “he should resign first from his post so that someone who can do the job of lowering energy rate takes over.”
Cusi is the vice chairman of the PDP-Laban, the political party of President Rodrigo Duterte.
Some oil companies announced a P1.15 increase per liter of gasoline and P0.60 per liter of diesel.
Last week, Meralco announced a P0.235 per kiloWatt hour increase in the prices of electricity. This is equivalent to P47 for household using 200kWh per month.
Members of Bayan Muna today, July 12 held a protest action in front of Meralco-Kamuning to call for a stop to contrived power rate hikes and the Department of Energy’s (DOE) lack of action to lower power rates and oil prices.
