Lapid commends Diaz for ending PH’s Olympic gold drought

Senator Lito Lapid has filed a resolution that seeks to congratulate and commend Hidilyn Diaz for winning the Philippine’s first Olympic gold medal.

Lapid cited that Diaz has brought honor and pride to the country, after winning the women’s 55-kilogram-weightlifting event of the Tokyo Olympics, with an Olympic record of 224 kilograms on July 26, 2021.

Diaz victory has also ended the country’s almost century-long Olympic gold medal drought. In the said even, Diaz bested the world record holder, Liao Quiyun of China who finished with 223 kilograms.

The Philippine Senate meanwhile, on several occasions given recognition and commendation to outstanding Filipinos for their contribution in showcasing our nation’s promising potential in the various fields and disciplines of Sports and in bringing pride and honor to the country by winning in international competitions.

“Isa ako sa milyun-milyong Pilipino na nagpupugay at nagpapasalamat kay Hidilyn Diaz sa parangal na ibinigay niya sa ating bansa,” Lapid said.

“Higit sa gintong medalyang iuuwi ni Hidilyn sa ating bansa ay kinikilala natin ang matinding hirap at sakripisyo na pinagdaanan niya para lamang maitaas ang bandila ng ating bansa sa Tokyo Olympics at sa bawat kumpetisyon na kanyang sinasalihan,” he said.

“Marapat lamang na tayo sa Senado ay kilalanin ang tagumpay na ito ng isang proud Pinay na si Hidilyn Diaz,” Lapid added.

Hailing from Zamboanga City, Diaz also became the first Filipino athlete to win double Olympic medals after she won her silver in thee women’s 53-kilogram category at the 2016 edition of the quadrennial meet in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
