Speaker Lord Allan Jay Velasco on Thursday underscored the need for the House of Representatives to check if the government is spending well the funds for the COVID-19 response.
In a television interview, Velasco was asked if it is going to be a priority to look into how the government has so far spent the money for its COVID-19 response when Congress resumes session.
“Definitely kailangan yun,” replied Velasco.
Aside from the power of the purse, Velasco said Congress has oversight power.
“Definitely lahat ng mga budget na ipinapasa po namin is we need to find out whether it is being spent well. So I’m sure we’re going to have a few hearings so that the Executive will be able to explain and show to us kung saan na po nila nagamit ang mga pondo na inilaan po natin para sa pagsagot sa COVID-19 pandemic,” Velasco added.
Several personalities have been questioning the way the government responded to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Recently, Senator Manny Pacquiao said the distribution of the financial assistance for families affected by the government-imposed lockdown has been marred with corruption.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has denied the allegation.
