President Rodrigo Duterte can’t escape prosecution for his deeds if he were to become the vice president, former Supreme Court spokesperson Theodore Te said Saturday (July 17).
“The VP is not immune from suit by law or by tradition. Non-issue. Non-story,” Te tweeted.
The former Supreme Court spokesperson made the remark after Duterte shared his justification for running for vice president.
At PDP-Laban’s national assembly in Pampanga, Duterte said he will have immunity from suit as vice president.
“Sabi ng batas na kung presidente ka, bise presidente ka, may immunity ka, eh ‘di tatakbo na lang ako ng bise presidente. And after that tatakbo uli ako ng bise presidente at bise presidente at bise presidente,” he said.
Duterte reiterated that the International Criminal Court (ICC), which is set to decide if a formal investigation should be conducted regarding the administration’s anti-drug campaign, “can never acquire jurisdiction” over him “in a million years.”
The PDP-Laban has passed a resolution urging Duterte to run for vice president and choose his running mate.
