Anong petsa na? Lawmaker prods DepEd to give teachers’ overtime pay for SY 2020-2021

By Billy Begas

Assistant Minority Leader and ACT Teachers Rep. France Castro slammed the Department of Education (DepEd) for failing to give the public school teachers their compensation for overtime work.

Worst, Castro said the school year ended last July 10 but teachers were still busy with numerous paperwork to comply with DepEd’s Results-Based Performance Management System.

Castro stressed that teachers should be fairly compensated for the ‘lost leave benefits’ under the proportional vacation pay (PVP), with the last school year requiring them to work for 13 months.

Under the PVP teachers will not have sick leave and vacation leave benefit in exchange for the summer break.

“The long school year on top of the demands of the blended distance learning of the DepEd are taking a toll on the mental and physical health of our public school teachers,” Castro added.

Simply reading posts of teachers on social media is not enough, Castro said DepEd should heed the demands of its stakeholders.
