President Rodrigo Duterte believes his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, will not run for president in the 2022 polls, Malacañang said.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said Duterte-Carpio’s statement yesterday was the Chief Executive’s “basis” for his decision to pursue his vice presidential bid.
“I think, among others, the statement was the President’s basis to conclude that things are clear now, that he can run for vice president, because I think his perception is that Mayor Sara Duterte will not run for elections,” Roque said in a televised briefing Thursday.
“Since only one Duterte can run, and in his perception, Mayor Sara won’t run, then he can run. But alam niyo, nothing is final until October. I would hope that the nation will give the father and daughter breathing space to discuss their course of action,” he added.
In a press statement Wednesday, Duterte-Carpio urged his father and Senator Christopher “Bong” Go to publicly confirm their decision to run as a tandem and asked them to stop using her name as the “reason for them running or not running.”
