President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday instructed the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), and other sporting organizations to provide the necessary support to athletes.
Duterte made the remark during the awarding of incentives to Philippine Olympians who brought home medals in the recently-concluded Tokyo Games.
In his speech, the Chief Executive assured that the government remains committed to providing full support to Filipino athletes.
“I enjoin the Philippine Sports Commission, the Philippine Olympic Committee, and other sports bodies to continue providing much-needed assistance to keep our athletes on top of their game and to help them become all-time greats,” according to him.
Duterte also thanked the POC and the PSC “for their unwavering support and strong efforts in ensuring that our athletes were ready to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.”
The Philippines won a record four medals at the Tokyo Games.
Hidilyn Diaz bagging the country’s first Olympic gold in the 55-kilogram women’s weightlifting category; Carlo Paalam and Nesthy Petecio got silver medals at the men’s flyweight and women’s featherweight divisions, respectively; and Eumir Marcial secured the bronze medal in the men’s middleweight division.
