Duterte halts ‘unnecessary’ COVID-19 booster shots for Filipinos: ‘Wag ninyong sobrahan, delikado!

Filipinos will be limited to having two doses of the coronavirus vaccines for now.

President Duterte has opposed the distribution of COVID-19 booster shots to vaccinated persons due to health risks. Duterte said people should avoid an overdose of the vaccine, saying two shots are enough for virus protection.

“Tama na ‘yang dalawang doses. ‘Wag ninyong sobrahan, delikado,” Duterte said in his latest public address.

Duterte also tried to hold off on the COVID-19 booster plan since the country’s vaccine supplies are still insufficient for the initial inoculation drive.

“At alam mo, when you do that in multiple, hindi ka magsabi ng totoo, you deprive your countrymen, the others na hindi pa, sa isang bakuna na maibigay doon sa kapwa mo tao,” he said.

“Ganoon ‘yan eh. ‘Pag masyado kayo, mayroong iba may second, third, fourth, fifth. Hindi naman kailangan,” he said.

Duterte, who has been criticized for the government’s poor pandemic response amid the alarming rise in COVID-19 cases, said the booster shot does not necessarily boost an individual’s protection against the virus.

“It does not add really to the full protection of your body. You can even get contaminated again,” he said.
