Duterte’s frat brother withdraws application for SC seat

Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Commissioner Antonio Kho Jr., a fraternity brother of President Rodrigo Duterte, has withdrawn his application for a seat at the Supreme Court (SC).

“I was told that he withdrew his application,” SC Spokesperson Brian Hosaka said, adding that the reason for Kho’s withdrawal is unknown.

There are currently 10 other candidates vying for the vacant seat vacated by retired Justice Edgardo De Los Santos, who retired on June 12.

They are Court Administrator Midas Marquez; Deputy Court Administrator Raul Villanueva; Finance Undersecretary Antonette Tionko; Sandiganbayan Justice Amparo Cabotaje-Tang and Geraldine Faith Econg; and Court of Appeals (CA) Justices Apolinario Bruselas Jr., Ramon Cruz, Japar Dimaampao, Ronaldo Roberto Martin, and Maria Filomena Singh.

Kho served as undersecretary at the Department of Justice when it was led by another fraternity brother of Duterte from Lex Talionis, Vitaliano Aguirre II. He was asked to resign when Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra succeeded Aguirre.
