Face-off with Sotto? Gatchalian says will run for VP if picked by Sara Duterte

Senator Win Gatchalian on Wednesday said he was planning to seek the vice presidency if picked by Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte as her running mate in the 2022 elections.

But the Nationalist People’s Coalition member said his plans remained “fluid” and might change.

“I’m vying for the vice president position, but this is still very fluid… It’s very fluid at this point because it’s still being discussed with groups. There’s no final decision yet ,” the senator said on ANC’s Headstart.

Gatchalian said he talked to Duterte a few months ago after her camp invited him to join the senatorial lineup of her Hugpong ng Pagbabago regional party, but the senator said he proposed to her the possibility of running as her vice presidential candidate.

He said he would not pursue the candidacy if Duerte chose another VP candidate as her partner.

Gatchalian said he brought up the matter to his party-mate, NPC chair and Senate President Tito Sotto, who is also running for vice president with Senator Ping Lacson.

“Being party-mates and being a person who respects him, we will not have any conflict because our communication line’s open and we talked about this and our talk was quite fatherly and we told ourselves that we have to talk more often especially with the elections coming,” Gatchalian said on ANC.
