Final answer? Duterte, Bong Go to shelve candidacies if Sara runs for president

President Rodrigo Duterte will not run for vice president if his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, pursues the presidency in 2022, Malacañang said Wednesday (August 25).

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said Duterte made the announcement during his meeting with Cabinet Secretaries Tuesday (August 24). His statement, however, was edited out of the “Talk to the People” aired on the same night.

Roque told state-run PTV that Senator Bong Go will also shelve his presidential bid if Sara runs for the same post.

Quoting Duterte during Tuesday’s meeting, Roque said: “Ang kanyang sabi po ay, ‘should Sara decide to run, Bong Go is out. For my part, dahil delicadeza, hindi po puwede dalawa kami diyan, if she runs, out na rin ako.’”

During the televised briefing, Duterte said he will run for vice president to continue his crusade against illegal drugs, insurgency and criminality.

“Gusto talaga ninyo? Oh, sige, tatakbo ako ng bise presidente. Then I will continue this crusade. I’m worried about the drugs, insurgency, then criminality, drugs,” he said.

PDP-Laban earlier announced that Duterte has accepted the party’s endorsement for him to run for vice president.
