Hawa lang: PH Covid-19 deaths lower than other nations – Duterte

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte undermined the number of Covid-19-related deaths reported in the Philippines since the pandemic began last year, saying that other countries have higher fatality rates.

In his pre-recorded weekly address aired Tuesday morning, Duterte said cases of Covid-19 are rising

worldwide.

“Even in the United States, in other countries, there’s a rise of COVID cases all over,” the Chief Executive said.

“Hirap ang America ngayon. Ang Europe is suffering from… maraming mas namatay; Turkey maraming patay; Saudi Arabia mas maraming patay. Ito atin hawa lang. Ang patay natin hindi masyado ganoon karami,” he added.

Meanwhile, Duterte instructed the National Task Force against Covid-19 to “recalibrate” the government’s pandemic response as the country recorded highest single-day figure at 22,366 on Monday.

“Whether the rise in the number of cases is due to the Delta variant or not, we need to recalibrate our response,” according to him.

“Although we have shared the positive effect of the recent (enhanced community quarantine) in (the National Capital Region) which lowered the reproduction rate, humina ang hawaan, of the virus, we are also evaluating whether granular or localized lockdowns would work in our current situation. Kailangan pag-aralan ng national task force,” he said.
