Senator Risa Hontiveros criticized the Department of Health for healthcare workers’ unpaid benefits in light of the recent audit report released by the Commission on Audit (COA).
In an interview on Abante’s Balitaan at Kumustahan, the lady senator questioned why the special risk allowance; hazard pay as well as the meals, accommodations, transportation and life insurance of healthcare workers in both public and private hospitals across all regions in the country were not given.
She explained that in the COA report, there was almost P12 billion worth of funds which has not been expended by DOH particularly for the SRA, hazard pay, and other allowances.
Hontiveros made an example out of Joy Cruz whose mother, a healthcare worker as well, died amid the pandemic. She said that instead of receiving at least P1 million under Bayanihan 1 and death benefits, their family only got a meager amount of a few thousand.
Hontiveros mentioned that it’s difficult for the healthcare workers to survive, maintain a healthy lifestyle amid the COVID-19 pandemic while also providing for their families.
This, according to her, has been the longest and most significant concern that should be addressed by the DOH.
