Palace cites ‘direct correlation’ between funding, athletic performance

By Prince Golez

Malacañang on Tuesday insisted that government funding for the athletes helped improve the country’s Olympic performance.

In a virtual presser, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the present government allocated higher appropriation for the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) than in the previous administration.

Citing a government report, Roque said the PSC received a budget worth P223,547,000 in 2017, higher by P146,320,300 in 2011.

The Philippines won its first Olympic gold after Hidilyn Diaz bested eight competitors in the women’s 55kg weightlifting competition. The country also earned two silvers and one bronze at the 2020 summer Olympic Games in Japan.
