Palace to relay Onyok Velasco’s concern to Duterte: ‘Baka mabigyan siya ng pabuya ngayon’

By Prince Golez

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque on Thursday vowed to raise the issue of Olympic silver medalist Onyok Velasco to President Rodrigo Duterte.

Velasco earlier claimed that he failed to receive some of the rewards promised to him when he won silver in Olympic boxing in 1996 in Atlanta.

Iche-check natin kung merong retroactive effect yung P10 million na binibigay ng gobyerno,” Roque said during his televised briefing.

Under Republic Act No. 10699 or the “National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act,” signed by the late President Benigno Aquino III in 2015, Filipino athletes who secure a silver medal in the Summer Olympic and Winter Olympic Games are entitled to P5 million.

Velasco had said he’s yet to receive the P2.5 million cash pledge from Congress.
