Senator Grace Poe on Monday urged PhilHealth and hospital associations to reach a “middle ground” to straighten out disagreements on the payments of claims following the issuance of a PhilHealth circular temporarily suspending payment of hospital claims to those being investigated for fraud.
“PhilHealth must not resort to a sweeping mechanism that could further delay the settlement of legitimate obligations,” the chair of the Senate public services committee said.
“The well-being of PhilHealth members is on the line if the standoff will not be resolved,” she added.
PhilHealth recently released Circular 2021-0013 which temporarily suspended payment of hospital claims that are being investigated for possible fraud. Based on the circular, PhilHealth can suspend payment claims for up to 240 days or eight months.
PhilHealth said it issued the circular to prevent further wastage of funds lost to irregular claims.
But the hospital groups said the circular was “baseless.”
“As it is, a number of hospitals are reeling from financial distress due to unpaid claims, putting in peril their capacity to provide service to Filipinos covered by the state health insurance,” Poe said.
“The delays or non-payment of claims are also sapping the resources of hospitals to pay their medical frontliners,” she said.
“Alam na dapat ng PhilHealth ang trabaho nito. Hindi dapat maging rason ang katiwalian ng ilan sa pagdurusa ng mas nakakarami,” Poe added.
