PDP-Laban has shut the door on making Senator Manny Pacquiao as the party’s standard bearer in the 2022 polls, suggesting that he run instead for reelection.
Lawyer Melvin Matibag, the party’s secretary general, said Tuesday (August 24) that Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi, PDP-Laban’s president, reached out to Pacquiao about the possibility of joining the party’s senatorial slate.
“In fact, there are private individuals na nagri-reach out. Because we are offering Senator Manny Pacquiao to lead the senatorial lineup of PDP-Laban,” Matibag said.
Pacquiao is expected to fly back to the Philippines soon from the United States following his boxing match against Cuban Yordenis Ugas. He has said he will make an important announcement in September.
Asked what PDP-Laban will do if Pacquiao insists on running for president, Matibag said: “I don’t think that he can run under PDP-Laban because ‘yun nga po, majority na po of leaders and members ng PDP-Laban, we are endorsing the tandem of Go-Duterte.”
PDP-Laban recently announced that President Rodrigo Duterte accepted the party’s endorsement as its vice presidential candidate. Senator Bong Go is being eyed as his running mate.
