Vax donations play a part in Duterte’s decision to recall VFA termination

By Prince Golez

The vaccine donations led President Rodrigo Duterte to retract the termination of the country’s Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the United States (US).

In his televised address Monday, Duterte said the US donation of Covid-19 vaccines made him reconsider his decision to scrap the two-decade military pact.

“Give and take lang tayo. So pasalamat tayo sa kanila at may naibigay na naman ako sa kanila na concession,” according to the chief executive.

“I consider the continuance of the Visiting Forces Agreement. In gratitude, I said, ano lang mahirap ‘yan. Nagpapasalamat tayo,” he also said.

Duterte also thanked US President Joe Biden and the American people for the vaccine donations.

“I’d like to thank the President of the United States, si Biden, the government and the people of America for not forgetting us,” the President said.

“Do not forget us because we share the same outlook sa geopolitics, especially in Southeast Asia,” he added.

The US government has so far donated at least 13.2 million doses of anti-Covid-19 vaccines to the Philippines.
