Will Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque be leaving the Duterte Cabinet soon?
Senator Leila de Lima has questioned Roque’s loyalty to President Duterte after he remained abroad while his boss faces an international inquiry into his bloody war on drugs.
“Harry Roque is in New York applying for a new job while the ICC, in record time, ordered the investigation of his boss for crimes against humanity. Abandon ship na ba Harry?” De Lima tweeted on Sept. 17, 2021.
Roque has traveled to New York to lobby for a seat at the International Law Commission (ILC), a United Nations body that develops and codifies international law. Some legal experts have objected to Roque’s nomination due to lack of qualifications to serve at the rights body.
While Roque is in the US, the International Criminal Court announced that it has authorized launch an investigation into the alleged crimes against humanity committed in Duterte’s drug war. The inquiry into the drug-related deaths will be pursued despite Duterte’s withdrawal of the country’s membership from the Rome Statute, the created the ICC, in 2019.
Malacañang has refused to cooperate with the ICC probe on the drug war.
Roque, a former lawmaker criticized for his turnaround on human rights issues since serving Duterte, is rumored to launch a senatorial run in next year’s elections. The Palace official is expected to resign from the government post to run for public office.
