The coronavirus outbreak can still be contained with the help of free mass testing and effective leadership from national government, among others, before the situation spirals out of control.
Health reform advocate Dr. Tony Leachon proposed a four-point action plan on how to “end” the pandemic in the country after expressing concern about the alarming surge in COVID-19 cases.
Leachon’s blueprint includes intensifying the government’s testing and tracing efforts to screen people with the illness. More Filipinos should also be inoculated to enhance protection against the coronavirus.
“How to end pandemic 1. Free expanded mass testings 2. Trace 3. Rapid vaccination Plus – most importantly 4 Great leadership and governance,” he tweeted.
Leachon, a former government adviser, earlier expressed dismay with the national government’s poor handling of the pandemic that led to the worsening coronavirus situation in the country. He has called for the resignation of three Cabinet members, namely Health Sec. Francisco Duque III, vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr., and Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque, for their alleged incompetence at a time Filipinos clamor for leadership to steer the country away from the pandemic.
Leachon is also opposed to government’s experimental lockdown scheme that eases the quarantine restrictions in Metro Manila due to concerns of a “vicious cycle” where the virus might infect more people. The relaxed lockdown will allow increased mobility, thereby increase virus transmission, he said.
“It will not solve our problems. We need to slow down the virus-free mass testings , trace , and rapid vaccination rate. The playbook is proven to be effective. High Healthcare utilization rate is the product of rapid transmission. That’s very basic! We are wasting precious time,” he tweeted.
Metro Manila has shifted to the general community quarantine under alert level 4 from Sept. 16 until the end of the month. As of Sept. 16, 2021, the country has recorded 21,261 new cases of infections, that pushed the total cases to 2.3 million. More than 36,000 people have died from the COVID-19 disease.
