Doc Willie Ong sets condition for VP campaign: No bashing, no script

Doctor Willie Ong may just be the breath of fresh air in the toxic world of politics.

Ong, a cardiologist and a social media star, has vowed he won’t resort to bashing anyone when the 2022 national campaign begins.

The popular cardiologist earlier agreed to be the vice president of Manila Mayor Isko Moreno in the upcoming polls. He initially rejected the proposal to seek the vice presidency but later yielded to help an Isko presidency save Filipinos lives during the pandemic.

When he agreed to be Mayor Isko’s partner, Ong imposed some conditions during the campaign. He refused to attack his VP competitors like President Duterte and Senate President Tito Sotto and follow any script. The doctor would rather focus on his campaign platform that centers on improving the health of Filipinos.

“I will not bash anyone. I will not follow any script. I am ready to sacrifice… Use me as you will…” Ong said on Facebook.

“Our country needs hope and healing. Millions of lives are waiting. Let’s do this,” he said, remembering the instance when he finally decided on his VP bid.

Ong made the statement in a recent Facebook post titled “Why I Agreed to Run with Isko as his VP.” At a recent assembly in Manila, he said he is prepared to lose the VP polls but hopes Mayor Isko will win. He is willing to a “saling-pusa” or a minor player in the national campaign.
