President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday condemned the world’s richest countries for hoarding Covid-19 countries.
In a pre-recorded speech during 76th United Nations General Assembly, Duterte lamented the shortage of vaccines in resource-poor countries.
“There is a man-made drought of vaccines ravaging poor countries. Rich countries hoard life-saving vaccines, while poor nations wait for trickles. They now talk of booster shots, while developing countries consider half-doses just to get by,” the country’s chief executive said.
“This is shocking beyond belief and must be condemned for what it is – a selfish act that can neither be justified rationally nor morally,” he added.
Duterte stressed that Covid-19 pandemic will continue to be a threat until vaccines are made available globally in an equitable way.
“The plain fact is – this pandemic will not end unless the virus is defeated everywhere. Vaccines are key to achieving this,” he said.
