Willie Ong content to be ‘saling-pusa’ to Mayor Isko: ‘Okay lang sa akin matalo basta manalo siya’

Willie Ong, a prominent doctor and internet star, is not lusting for power despite a decision to run for vice president in next year’s elections.

At the proclamation rally held in Manila Wednesday, Ong vowed to keep his campaign clean and free of political attacks against his rivals. He is even prepared to lose the VP elections but hopes Manila Mayor Isko Moreno will win the presidency.

“Okay lang sa akin matalo eh basta manalo siya. Pag nanalo sya, okay na ako. Kuntento na ako. I’m sure gagawn naman niya at ready tayong tumulong,” Ong said.

Mayor Isko formally announced plans to run for president in next year’s elections during the assembly. He also picked Ong, also a social media celebrity with over 16 million followers on Facebook, to be his running mate.

Ong, in his speech, said he agreed to run as Mayor Isko’s VP since they both share the same goals such as looking after the health of Filipinos especially during the pandemic. If he wins the VP poset, Ong plans to focus on reforming the health care system, from enhancing assistance to health care workers, improving health facilities to purchasing better COVID-19 vaccines for Filipinos.

In his campaign for the vice presidency, Ong won’t actively seek campaign donations or endorsements similar to his Senate run in 2019. He also has no intention of dissing his opponents in the vice presidential race.

“Wala rin akong tatanggapin para sa akin. Kung mayroon lalapit, sabi ko baka pweden saling-pusa na lang eko , saling pusa sa ads niya, bigyan lang ako 3 seconds, saling-pusa sa poster,” he added.
