Duterte taps cops, soldiers to augment medical workforce: ‘Wala na akong ibang maasahan’

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte urged the police and the military to support hospitals in responding to the Covid-19.

Duterte made the statement as health service in the country faces workforce shortages amid spike in Covid-19 infections.

“We have a dearth of supply of the human resource… Our healthcare workers are getting sick, our hospitals are being filled to the brim and more of our people are getting sick and dying from Covid-19,” the Chief Executive said during his public address Wednesday.

“I am ordering the medical corps of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police, if you are listening to me now, please place your human resources on ready, on deck,” he added.

Duterte said he’s tapping policemen and soldiers to beef up the government workforce fighting Covid-19 because he can quickly count on them.

“Talagang, alam mo, ‘yan talaga yan ang madali kong maasahan,” according to him.

“I have to use a little of my influence sa kanila to convince them to ano. I do not want to order na ganoon, kasi pangit ‘yan eh. Makikiusap lang ako na tulungan ang mga kababayan natin. Eh kung wala na akong mahila dito, hila doon, eh kayo na kasi wala na akong ibang maasahan,” he concluded.
