Duterte urges UN member states to help displaced Afghans

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday called on member States of the United Nations to “help Afghan people” desperately fleeing their country after the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan.

Speaking on the first day of the High-Level General Debate, Duterte reported that the Philippines has opened its doors to Afghan citizens who left their home.

“The Philippines, in line with its longstanding humanitarian tradition, has opened its doors to Afghan nationals, especially women and children, fleeing from conflict,” the Chief Executive said.

“As one global community, we must do our utmost to help the Afghan people and all those who continue to suffer,” he added.

Early this month, Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. confirmed that the country has welcomed Afghan refugees.

“We stay steady where others waver: tonight we welcome Afghan nationals including women & kids seeking refuge. Our doors are open to those fleeing conflict, persecution, sexual abuse and death,” Locsin wrote in a tweet.
