Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque is in favor of legalizing divorce in the Philippines.
On video-sharing app TikTok, Roque said everyone deserves a second chance at happiness.
“Panig po ako sa divorce kasi tao lang tayo na nagkakamali. Eh bakit naman tayo paparusahan yung mga nagkakamali kung sino yung pipiliin nila na magiging esposo,” the secretary also said.
“Kung talaga nagkakamali, bigyan sila ng pagkakataon na magkaroon ng second chance. Kaya nga pumapasok sa marriage eh para ka magkaroon ng kaligayahan, eh kung puro hinagpis naman. Let’s liberate them from marriages that have failed,” he added.
Last August, the House Committee on Population and Family Relations approved a bill seeking to legalize absolute divorce in the country.
The proposed Absolute Divorce Act provides each of the former spouses the right to remarry.
Apart from the Vatican, the Philippines is the only country in the world where divorce is illegal.
