‘It’s inevitable’: PH must prepare for COVID-19 booster shots — Leachon

A booster shot of the COVID-19 vaccine will be needed for Filipinos due to decreasing protection over time.

Doctor Tony Leachon has urged the government to prepare administering the booster shots several months after Filipinos completed their two-dose regimen. The booster shot is expected to boost the protection of vaccinated individuals.

The former government adviser likewise called for the purchase of COVID-19 vaccines with high efficacy in the face of the threat posed by the highly transmissible Delta variant.

“The Philippines should prepare for booster doses based on regulatory approvals and using high efficacy rate vaccines. Strategic planning is needed. It’s inevitable,” he tweeted on Monday, Sept. 27, 2021.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention earlier recommended booster shot of Pfizer vaccine at least six months after getting the first two doses to people people aged 65 years and older, residents aged 18 years and older in long-term care setting, and people aged 50–64 years with underlying medical conditions.

Some studies have shown that after getting vaccinated against COVID-19, virus protection may reportedly decrease over time and become less able to protect a person from the Delta variant.

The Philippine government is still waiting for the World Health Organization’s recommendation for the use of booster shots. The health body earlier called for a moratorium on boosters through the end of September amid concerns poor countries face vaccine shortage.

President Duterte, in his United Nations speech, said talk of booster shots in rich countries was a “selfish act” since many poor countries struggle to buy vaccines to fully inoculate their people. He said rich countries hoard the life-saving vaccines while poor wait for trickles.

“The now talk of booster shots while developing countries consider half doses just to get by — this is shocking beyond belief and must be condemned for what it is, a selfish act that can neither be justified rationally or morally,” Duterte said.

Leachon said the most of the country’s vaccine stocks are the Chinese-made vaccines at present. He suggested the purchase of high efficacy vaccines to improve public confidence in the vaccines.
