Just call historical revisionism on martial law as distortion, lies – historian

A Filipino historian called on the public that instead of using the term historical revisionism, they can outright call it distortion or lies.

In an interview on Politiko on Friday, Prof. Xiao Chua said revisionism is not all bad since sometimes it aims to correct or update information created by past historians.

“Kasi halimbawa, sabi ko si Andres Bonifacio ang unang pangulo, o pangulo na nauna pa kay Aguinaldo, o ng pambansang pamahalaan ng Pilipino, e parang revisionist din ako in a way. Diba pero alam kong tama yung sinasabi ko dahil yan ay nasa dokumento,” he said.

In the context of wrong information spreading about Martial Law, Chua said he would rather call it distortion than revisionism. He added that he would like to remind Filipinos that revising history is not completely bad.

“Kasi halimbawa, may alam yung mga historians noon at hindi sila alam at ngayon alam na natin di ba dahil may mga bagong dokumentong mahahanap tungkol sa isang kasaysayan na macocorrect, pwedeng irevise to correct,” Chua explained.

Chua mentioned that that is the reason why he is against using the term because of the fact that it gains a negative connotation, so he thinks it is not right to use it in Filipino context.
