Locsin seeks help for ailing photojournalist behind iconic photos of Aquino assassination

An appeal to the kind and generous hearts.

A highly respected veteran photojournalist, who shot the photos of Senator Ninoy Aquino lying lifeless on the Manila airport tarmac after being assassinated in 1983, is in need of financial aid for his hospital bills.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. has appealed for assistance for Business Mirror’s photojournalist Recto Mercene after learning about his medical condition.

“He photographed history and thereby made history. Recto Mercene. He deserves to be helped by all of us,” Locsin tweeted.

Mercene, 77, has been hospitalized after suffering a bad fall, according to a friend of the family.
Jam Regis Kotenko wrote on Facebook about the predicament of Mercene and appealed for financial aid due to his mounting bills.

They found a hemorrhage in his brain and is experiencing on-and-off fever, implying infection. COVID-19 has so far been ruled out after two negative PCR tests,” Jam said on Facebook.

“They are conducting numerous tests on his heart, brain, and blood in order to figure out a diagnosis that may be related to his many pre-existing conditions. He is diabetic. He is asthmatic. He’s had brain surgery. He’s had a heart bypass,” she said.
