Senator Sherwin Gatchalian is opposed to the appointment of former police chief to a post in Malacañang.
Gatchalian, in a tweet, said former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Debold Sinas should reject the government post and just retire from the service. Turning down the post offered by President Duterte would be the honorable act, he said.
President Duterte has appointed Sinas as a Palace undersecretary months after he bowed out of the police service last May 2021. Sino, who drew flak over the mañanita quarantine breach controversy, reached the mandatory retirement age of 56.
“He should just decline the position and retire quietly especially after mañanita at the height of the pandemic. It’s the most honorable act to do,” Gatchalian tweeted on Sept. 11, 2021.
In 2020, Sinas drew flak over the mañanita held to celebrate his 55th birthday in May despite the government’s strict quarantine rules such as ban on mass gatherings. He was chief of the National Capital Region Police Office at the time.
President Duterte later appointed Sinas as PNP chief and cleared him of any liability from the mañanita mess.
