Pambili ng gadgets, allowance: Additional P42B for DepEd’s 2022 budget pushed

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) urged the Department of Education (DepEd) to allocate P42.3 billion to provide gadgets and internet allowance to poor students.

ACT said the budget is enough to provide P6,000 worth of gadget and P150 monthly internet allowance to 20% of the 28.2 million leaners for School Year 2021-2022.

“The increase in number of enrollees this school year despite the continuing health and economic crisis and challenging distance learning set-up only proves our youth’s desire to learn and go back to school. The government should fulfill its responsibility to support our learners and ensure that no one gets left behind,” said ACT Secretary General Raymond Basilio.

The DepEd only received a 5.9% increase or P32.8 billion in the 2022 National Expenditure Program (NEP).

ACT said there were major budget cuts on vital programs like basic education facilities, flexible learning options, and Indigenous People’s Education Program (IPED), while there was no provision for student aid.
