President Rodrigo Duterte revealed that he was pissed when Senator Dick Gordon threatened to stop Philippine Red Cross’ COVID-19 testing agreement with the government due to the bills racked up by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth).

In a televised briefing aired Thursday (Sept. 2), Duterte said it was disappointing that Gordon prioritized money and profit at a time when the government needed all the help it could get to deal with the first wave of COVID-19 cases last year.

“Ang pinakamabaho na nakita ko sa iyo is when you threatened to stop testing. Anak ka ng ikaw…You threatened government that you will stop testing people so that they will die just because you are not paid and the money that you have accumulated all these years would run into billions at ang gusto kong makita ‘yung audit talaga ng totoo ng Red Cross,” Duterte added.

Gordon warned in August last year that the Philippine Red Cross will stop the COVID-19 testing it was conducting in partnership with the government unless Philhealth paid its P700-million debt as soon as possible.

Duterte asked Filipinos if they also noticed how furious Gordon was when he threatened to stop the COVID-19 testing services offered by the Philippine Red Cross. He said public service should’ve been the non-profit organization’s priority.

“I cannot see the rationale of your statement na you threatened government with something which ought to be done by you irrespective of whether or not may pera ba o wala,” said Duterte.

“Is this a fair move of yours during the time when the Philippines is suffering from — just like other nations — the effects of the pandemic?” he added.
