PSC ain’t enough: House panels form TWG to discuss Dep’t of Sports bill

By Billy Begas

The House Committees on Government Reorganization and on Youth and Sports Development have created a technical working group (TWG) to consolidate four measures seeking to create the Department of Sports.

Deputy Speaker and Antipolo City Rep. Roberto Puno will head the TWG that will consolidate his House Bill 214 with HB 920 authored by Deputy Speaker and 1-PACMAN party-list Rep. Michael Romero, HB 2521 of PBA party-list Rep. Jericho Jonas Nograles, and HB 4812 filed by Pangasinan Rep. Ramon Guico III.

The measures seek to establish a single, unified and integrated national sports body responsible for implementing policies on the promotion and development of sports and health fitness programs in the country.

Youth and Sports Development chairperson and Isabela Rep. Faustino Michael Carlos Dy III said that while the country remains euphoric for its best ever Olympic campaign, the popular sentiment now is to prioritize sports in the national agenda.

“While we have the Philippine Sports Commission created under Republic Act 6847, we must admit that it does not have the capacity and nationwide reach to overseas sports programs, especially when it comes to identifying talent, (and) development of athletic youth, who show potential to become world-class athletes one day,” Dy said.
