The united opposition proposed by Vice President Lei Robredo for the 2022 elections will no longer push through.
According to former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, the unity talks went down the drain after Senator Panfilo Lacson, Senator Manny Pacquiao and Manila Mayor Isko Moreno announced their plans to seek the presidency in next year’s polls.
Robredo previously held talks with these presidential aspirants in the hopes of fielding a single opposition candidate in next year’s elections. A united opposition, Robredo believed, will be crucial to defeat the anointed one of President Duterte in the 2022 polls.
“Bunga ng mga pagdeklara ng pagtakbo bilang Presidente nina Sen. Ping Lacson, Sen. Manny Pacquiao at Mayor Isko Moreno, nabasura nang tuluyan ang ‘unity talks’ na tinutulak ni VP Leni Robredo,” Trillanes wrote on Facebook on Sept. 23, 2021.
The three politikos really wanted to run for president and are not really part of the genuine opposition anyway, said Trillanes.
“Simula’t sapul, talagang desidido naman silang tumakbong pagka-Presidente,” he said. “Bukod pa rito, hindi naman sila TUNAY NA OPOSISYON kahit papaano pa natin baliktarin ito,” he said.
Trillanes, in the same Facebook post, asked Robredo to make up her mind about her 2022 political plans. Robredo already has enough time to ponder on the decision and hopefully would announce her final plan, he added.
Robredo has played coy about whether or not she will run for president or seek a local post in her home province of Camarines Sur next year. But if it will be a one-on-fight fight against former Senator Bongbong Marcos, she said she was willing to join the race.
With a week before the filing of certificates of candidacies for the 2022 elections, Trillanes is now asking Robredo make a decision soon.
“Kung kaya’t nananawagan na ang grupong Magdalo para sa agarang pagdedesisyon ni VP Leni ukol sa darating na 2022 elections. Sa mga nakaraang buwan, ang buong oposisyon ay hinayaan si VP Leni na pagdaanan ang kanyang masusing decision-making process. Nirespeto at inintindi ito ng oposisyon dahil alam natin kung gaano kabigat ang desisyong ito,” he said.
