Thank you na lang! Comelec: No funds for poll workers’ hazard pay

By Billy Begas

The national government did not allocate any fund for the hazard pay of poll workers in the 2022 elections.

In Friday’s budget deliberation, ACT Teachers party-list Rep. France Castro reiterated her appeal to the Comelec to give hazard pay to teachers and other individuals who will serve as Board of Election Inspectors (BEIs) in the May 2022 elections.

“Dagdag ko na lang po doon sa hinihiling natin para sa mga BEIs, sana ma-consider din po ‘yung service risk allowance din dahil ito po ay pandemya, dapat ma-consider din ‘yung katumbas na SRA (special risk allowance) ng health workers o tinatawag nating hazard pay during the day at saka ‘yung service credits, nasa batas po minimum of five days ang service credits… sana madagdagan,” Castro said.

Comelec chairman Sheriff Abas said the minimum service credit to be given to teachers is five days “but we will consider additional.”

“So as to hazard pay po, we asked that to DBM (Department of Budget and Management), unfortunately hindi nabigay ‘yung hazard pay. So sa ngayon sa budget namin ngayon, hindi kasama ang hazard pay,” Abas added.

Abas said Comelec has yet to finish computing the honorarium to be given to BEIs. In the initial computation, he said the honorarium may increase by P2,000.

The Comelec was allotted P26.7 billion under the 2022 National Expenditure Program (NEP).
