Aabot ba sa piskal? Guevarra orders NBI: Build up cases vs 153 cops in drug war

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra has ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct a case build up against 153 policemen involved in 50 cases of killings that have taken place during anti-illegal drugs operations.

“If the NBI will deem that the PNP-IAS (Philippine National Police-Internal Affairs Service) findings are enough, they may file the complaints directly,” he said.

“If the NBI think that more evidence will be needed, they will further investigate and build up the case,” he added.

The PNP-IAS earlier submitted to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for review 52 cases of killings during anti-illegal drug operations where policemen involved have been found liable.

“One case was apparently not drug-related, and no death arose in another case,” Guevarra noted.

Meanwhile, Guevarra said the DOJ and PNP held a meeting last Oct. 1 to discuss the DOJ findings on the review conducted on the 52 cases.

Aside from this, he added it was also discussed during the meeting “the directive given by the President to the DOJ and the PNP in his UNGA (United Nations General Assembly) address to review the conduct of the war on drugs with a view to determine possible accountability of law enforcement agents for transgressions of the law.”
