Amid worries over waning immunity, Domingo says no immediate need for vaccine booster shot

By Prince Golez

Philippine Food and Drug Administration (FDA) director general Eric Domingo sees no urgent need for Covid-19 booster shots.

Citing the low number of breakthrough Covid-19 vaccination, Domingo said vaccine boosters are not necessary yet.

“Hindi naman biglang tumataas ‘yung number of people getting breakthrough infections dito po sa Sinovac. Ibig sabihin, at this time, wala pa po talagang pangangailangan na magbigay ng booster dahil hindi naman tayo nakakakita pa talaga ng waning effect po nung vaccine,” he said during a meeting with President Rodrigo Duterte late Monday.

“Dahil kung at fifth month eh makita po natin na bumababa na ‘yung kanyang protection, eh dapat dumadami po ‘no ‘yung nagkakaroon ng breakthrough infection. Pero hindi pa po natin nakikita ‘yun at this time. So I fully agree na at this time, there’s no reason to believe that we need it immediately ‘no,” the FDA chief added.

The Philippines has fully vaccinated 23,186,969 individuals against Covid-19, as of October 11.
