1Sambayan’s goal of uniting the opposition remains a pipe dream despite rallying various groups to support a common candidate for the 2022 presidential race.
At least eight progressive groups expressed dismay with the decision of 1Sambayan convenors, led by retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, to endorse Vice President Leni Robredo for president even if she hasn’t announced her political plans.
The groups said that while they support Robredo’s efforts to unify the opposition, “the selection and endorsement by 1Sambayan of any presidential candidate at this time is premature and will hinder rather than help in attaining this primary objective.”
“We are concerned that 1Sambayan’s role in contributing to unification will be hampered by the perception that it has sealed support for a particular candidate. In a situation that remains very fluid, all efforts at forging a single unified slate should be exhausted and all options should remain open,” they said.
The groups that released the statement are: Kilusang Mayo Uno, Tanggol Magsasaka, National Union of Students of the Philippines, Youth Act Now Against Tyranny, Alliance of Concerned Teachers, Promition of Church People’s Response, Health Alliance for Democracy and Katribu.
They said 1Sambayan should endorse a presidential candidate after the filing of certificates of candidacy is over.
“By then we would have a clearer picture of who are running. This would also allow all unification efforts, including VP Robredo’s, to proceed unhampered,” the groups said.
Carpio had said that there was a “’remote possibility” that Robredo will reject 1Sambayan’s endorsement, even as she hasn’t declared which position she will be running for.
A day before the filing of COCs started, Robredo transferred her voter registration record from Naga City to Magarao, Camarines Sur. This would allow her to run for governor.
