Nagpaubaya kay Sara! Duterte shelves VP bid in favor of Bong Go

President Duterte and his former aide Senator Bong Go pulled a surprise on the nation after the latter bared plans to run for vice president.

The President withdrew from the vice presidential race and instead let Go seek the country’s second-highest government post in the 2022 elections. Duterte decided to retire from politics after more than three decades of government service. His six-year presidential term will end next year.

Go was accompanied by his boss in filing his certificate of candidacy for vice president at the Commission on Elections on Saturday. He will take the place of Duterte in the VP contest after getting the nomination from the ruling PDP-Laban party.

The administration party initially endorsed President Duterte as VP contender in the 2022 elections. Duterte at the time accepted the nomination with plans to escape criminal prosecution and continue his anti-drug campaign when his presidential term ends next year.

The President’s former aide, on the other hand, was earlier endorsed as presidential bet of PDP-Laban party but he turned down the nomination.

With the President pulling out of the VP race, will his daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte now run for president?

Go’s VP run fueled rumors that the President’s daughter may change her mind and eventually run for president in the 2022 elections. Mayor Sara earlier said she will not vie for the presidency and instead seek reelection after her dad announced his VP run. The father and daughter supposedly agreed that only one Duterte will run for national office in next year’s elections.
