Broadcasting over politics: Noli de Castro withdraws from Senate race

Former ABS-CBN broadcaster Noli de Castro is backing out of the senatorial elections to return to his first calling — broadcasting.

De Castro, a former vice president, decided to withdraw his senatorial candidacy, saying he realized he can serve the public better through mass media.

“I-sinumite ko ang aking kandidatura sa COMELEC noong Biyernes. Ngunit, nagkaroon ng pagbabago ang aking plano,” Kabayan said in a statement.

“Nais kong iparating sa lahat ng aking mga kaibigan at supporters na naghahanda na sanang tumulong sa akin, na nagpasiya akong hindi na ituloy ang aking kandidatura,” he said.

“Kasabay ng pagdarasal sa Poong Nazareno, napag-isip-isip kong mas makatutulong ako sa pagbibigay ng boses sa ating mga kababayan sa pamamagitan ng pamamahayag,” he said.

De Castro was supposed to seek a Senate comeback under the Aksyon Demokratiko ticket led by Manila Mayor Isko Moreno. He left ABS-CBN, his home for many years, to pursue his senatorial plans.

He said when he planned on seeking a Senate seat, he wanted to be people’s voice in the upper chamber. He said he wanted to help the people especially ordinary Filipinos who only want a life with comfort, dignity and peace in the middle of the pandemic.

Despite pulling out of the Senate polls, Kabayan promised to continue to render public service through mass media.

“Patuloy tayong magiging boses ng ating mga kababayan, lalo na sa panahong katulad nito na ang boses na iyon ay nalulunod sa ingay ng pulitika at paggamit ng kapangyarihan para sa sariling interes ng iilan,” he said.

Kabayan also thanked Mayor Isko and the rest of the Aksyon Demokratiko team for the trust and help when he first joined the party.

“At sa lahat ng nagtitiwala sa aking mga kabayan, maraming maraming salamat! Hawak ko sa aking puso ang ipinapakita ninyong pagmamahal, suporta, at tiwala,” he said.

“Ituloy po natin ang pagtutulungan para sa mas malakas na boses ng bayan,” he said.
