Change.org petition to recall Maria Ressa’s Nobel Peace Prize back online after takedown of first plea

Version two is here.

A new petition seeking to recall the Nobel Peace Prize given to Rappler boss Maria Ressa has been filed online after the takedown of its first petition.

The petition titled Recall the Nobel Prize of Maria Ressa v.2 has so far earned more than 29,000 signatures out of the 35,000 goal. The anti-Ressa petition, initiated by a certain Lorenz Ilba, seeks to strip Ressa of the award after she supposedly spreading false information about the Philippines’ state of free speech and press.

“Since the first post was removed as it nears the 200,000 signatures, then we will start again,” the petition read.

“We, the Filipino people, ask the Nobel Prize for Peace Committee to nullify the award given to Maria Ressa. Time and again, she deliberately provides false information about the country. We encourage you to validate our claims. The award is giving a negative image to both genuine journalism and the Nobel Committee. The Philippines continues to enjoy free speech, contrary to what Ressa is telling the world,” he said.

The petition ended with a message of hope that it will not be taken down.

The original post reportedly garnered more than 100,000 signatures.

Change.org scamming: Online petition to strip Maria Ressa of Nobel Peace Prize taken down

Last month, Ressa and fellow journalist Dmitry Muratov were given the Nobel Peace Prize for their courageous fight for freedom of expression in the Philippines and Russia. Ressa’s recognition drew mixed reactions from groups, with some cheering her win while others claiming she didn’t deserve it.
