Dark days before Martial Law: Enrile warns his friends in the government of imminent civil strife arising from “power confrontation”

Former senator Juan Ponce Enrile fears the looming head-on collision between Malacanang and the Senate could lead to political strife similar to the dark days before the declaration of Martial Law.

In a Facebook post, Enrile said: “I hope my friends in government will understand my concern. We have a country and a people to think about. They are the helpless, innocent pawns at the center of the looming power confrontation. I hope my friends are aware that there are vested interests ready to fan the fire to gain tremendous advantage and benefit from an escalation of the discord.”

“It seems to me that the national political situation in the country is nearly like what happened before President Marcos declared Martial Law 49 years ago in 1972. I hope you, my friends, use your brilliant minds to analyze the political situation and avoid the eruption of an unintended and unwanted civil strife in the land. Remember the situation is not to be taken lightly. Once it is launched, there is no turning back,” said the architect and implementer of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos’ Martial Law.

Enrile made the “unsolicited friendly warning” amid the growing tension between President Rodrigo Duterte and the Senate led by Dick Gordon on the long-running probe on pandemic supply contracts made by Pharmally Pharmaceutical and its backer, presidential business special consultant Michael Yang.

Duterte has ordered his Cabinet men to snub Gordon’s summon to attend the Blue Ribbon Committee hearings where he claimed they were disrespected and bullied while taking them out of their main responsibilities in the middle of the pandemic.

Gordon, however, has declared the Senate would continue its Pharmally probe while attacking the President for lawyering for the “plunderers.”
